Do You Need a Thread Border Router?

A Matter-over-Thread sensor is, on paper, the ideal smart home device: local, low-power, multi-platform. Then it arrives, and it will not pair, because nothing told you that a Thread device is unreachable until something joins its mesh to your normal network. That something is a border router, and whether you already own one decides whether "Plug-and-Play" on the box is true.
What a border router actually does
Thread is an IPv6 mesh radio — the devices form their own network on 802.15.4 hardware, which your Wi-Fi router cannot hear. A border router is any device with both radios that routes packets between the two: your controller sends an ordinary IP packet, the border router forwards it into the mesh. It is infrastructure, not a translator — once it exists, any controller on your LAN can reach every Thread device through it.

When you do not need one
Matter does not imply Thread. A "Matter over Wi-Fi" device joins your existing network and needs no extra hardware at all — the transport is named on every Matter device page here. Zigbee devices, despite using the same radio band, use a coordinator rather than a border router; the two are not interchangeable. One practical note on mesh health
Battery-powered Thread devices are sleepy end devices — they do not route. A mesh of only battery sensors hangs everything off the border router's own radio range. Adding a few mains-powered Thread devices (plugs, always-powered sensors) gives the mesh routers to relay through, which is usually the fix for "works in the same room, drops elsewhere".
